Is There Crossplay in Earth Defense Force 6
Earth Defense Force 6 was already released on August 25, 2022, however only in the Japanese market. It is only since July 25, 2024 that people in the rest of the world can play this title. What's more, EDF 6 also appeared on PC, including on Steam and Epic Games Store.
The game is known for its successful online mode, however, there is a lot of controversy about whether players from other platforms can expect crossplay. The answer is not as obvious as it might seem...
One of the developers' recent posts on crossplay explains that due to an outdated network implementation, they teamed up with Epic Online Services. With this solution, crossplay between PS4 and PS5 became possible. However, it requires players to create an account on the Epic Games platform. So, does it mean that the EDF 6 community can expect online gameplay between console and PC players?
Well, the answer is no. PC players will not - at least for now - be able to join together to play online with console players. On the plus side, however, people who bought the game version on Steam will be able to play with those who did the same on the Epic Games Store.
In summary, crossplay exists between PS4 and PS5 players and those who own the Steam version of the game and the Epic Games Store version on PC. This is not ideal, especially since players from Steam are even forced to create an account on EG. However, it is necessary in order to play online with others. Fortunately, the game's developers hear the voice of players on this issue and are planning changes. Albeit, at this point it is still too early to be specific.
