Here's A Trailer for the Canceled Duke Nukem Prequel
Animator Gregor Punchatz has presented the official trailer for Duke Nukem Begins, the unreleased installment of the iconic series.
Duke Nukem is a well-known FPS series. The first installment came out in 1991, but today the franchise is remembered mainly thanks to the latest installment, Duke Nukem Forever. The development of the title was very long, and the release was delayed many times. Finally, after several years from the announcement, the game came out in 2011 and turned out to be a complete disappointment.
Not much has happened around the series since then, but some people still can't get over its failure. One of those people is Gregor Punchatz - animator at Janimation, who managed the team working on the trailer to Duke Nukem Begins 13 years ago. It was supposed to be a prequel to the series, but due to legal problems, the game was canceled. Punchatz has published his work online - you can watch it below. Thanks to this, we can see a video full of action, explosions, and shooting, showing also the possibility of playing with four other users.
As Punchatz writes in the description, the devs gave their all to develop the best animation their studio had ever done. The news of the project's cancelation was devastating to the artists - they had previously thought they could compete with the more popular game trailer makers with this project. Now, after 13 years of developing this short work, Punchatz has let it go, because, as he says, the whole team deserves it. In the end, the animator expresses his hope that if he shows everyone what a great project it was, maybe someone will make the game after all.
What do you think about this idea? Do you think that the game would have a chance to save the series? The franchise currently belongs to Gearbox Software, but after all these years, is there any point in reviving the series, which is now associated in the minds of the players mainly with the disappointment of the last part?
