30-year-old Doom is Getting Beautiful Thanks to Ray Tracing Mod
Doom with ray tracing enabled looks really good. No, I'm not talking about Doom Eternal or Doom from 2016. We are talking about the very first installment of the series, released almost thirty years ago.
The web was recently flooded with a mass of more or less funny jokes and so-called fake news. To one of these categories - or both - we could also include the fact that Doom from 1993 received "unofficial support" for ray tracing. You could - if it weren't for the fact that thanks to the new mod ray tracing has really once again found its way into the first installment of this iconic FPS series. How does it look like? More than good. Anyway, see for yourself.
If you want to play the first Doom with ray tracing, you can download the modification here. You will of course need your original copy of the game (in the .wad format). It is also worth noting that so far the mod supports the first three episodes - Knee-Deep in the Dead, The Shores of Hell and Inferno - so the whole original game from 1993without the Thy Flesh Consumed stage, which was added two years later in The Ultimate Doom. It is compatible with both FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) scaling technology from AMD, as well as Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) from Nvidia.
Above you can take a look at two sample screenshots from Doom with ray tracing. The mod is not, of course, the first such project that enable us to play with ray tracing (you can watch a video using another such mod here). However, we must admit that this new project makes a very good impression.
Who knows, maybe John Romero - co-creator of Doom, who recently released a new level for the original Doom 2 to support the victims of the war in Ukraine - will decide to introduce this solution permanently?.
