New Record! Largest Number of Developers to Ever Work on a Game
Diablo 4 has broken the record for the length of credit roll. More than nine thousand people were on it.
No one was surprised when Diablo 4 turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year. The surprise, however, is how many people worked on the project.
- As reported by MobyGames, which has been providing extensive knowledge of games for years, the credit roll forDiablo 4 included as many as 9166 people. Of these, 475 were placed in the acknowledgements section, but the rest participated in the development of the project and were responsible for its release.
- This is an absolute record - no other video game can compare with Diablo IV in this respect.
- The largest, with 2464 names, is the group of people responsible for sound (including audio issues).
- 902 people were involved in the creation of graphic elements, and 394 in programming of the game. In turn, 193 developers were responsible for design, and 397 for quality testing.
- During the work, 67 children were born to the developers.
- Of those 9166 names on the payroll, nearly four thousand also worked on Overwatch 2, and just under 2,500 on Warcraft III: ReForged.
Game development studios are getting bigger and bigger
The increasing complexity of video games means that development teams working on AAA productions are getting bigger and bigger.. However, even taking this into account, a payroll exceeding nine thousand people for Diablo 4 is surprising. The very long development cycle probably played a large role in this. Work on the version that was eventually released (known as Project Fenris), began in 2016.
Recall that Diablo 4 was released on June 6, 2023 simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
The game turned out to be a huge hit and is the the fastest-selling game in the 32-year history of Blizzard Entertainment.
