Ahead of Diablo 4 Beta Launch, Fans Recall Failure of Diablo 3 and Error 37
The Diablo IV beta is generating a lot of excitement, but also concerns. Gamers are wondering if the new installment of the series will grace them with similar problems as Diablo III at launch.
Diablo 4 beta is fast approaching. Those with pre-orders will be able to check out the game tomorrow, and the following weekend all players will get a chance to join the fun. At least in theory, because Internet users have concerns about the testing process, having in mind, among other things, the infamous "Error 37" (Error 37).
The legendary (and hated) bug in Diablo III
The glitch in question appeared almost 11 years ago, just before the release of the highly anticipated Diablo III. In mid-May 2012, Blizzard Entertainment informed that when trying to log into the game, an "Error 37" could appear if you failed to connect to the server within 40 seconds (because that was supposed to be the maximum waiting time). If this happened, as it is written, the user should just try to log in again.
Looks like a standard warning that the servers might have trouble accommodating the huge number of people eager to play the new Diablo. At least that's what Blizzard claimed. Upon release, however, Diablo 3 had the players see "Error 37" so often, however, that some had trouble joining the game for up to 24 hours (or even longer).
It is fair to add that the problem concerned "only" logging in. After joining the game, there were usually no problems with the servers. Not that this improved the moods of people who, after spending hours in line to get their copy of Diablo III (and often reserving their free time), instead of wandering around Sanctuary, unsuccessfully tried to log into the game.
Diablo 4 beta like Diablo 3 at launch?
"Error 37" quickly grew into a meme and, in a way, a symbol of the problems that accompany the release of Blizzard games. The memory of this error remains vivid to this day and gamers have concerns about testing and the release of Diablo 4.
There is no shortage of comments online reminding of the infamous "thirty-seven". Some fans take a humorous approach to the issue, for example expecting an "update" to "error 38." However, there are more people who are expecting a repeat of the situation with the beta of D4 and therefore do not plan to take time off on this occasion this time.
Mentions of "error 37" and similar problems on the occasion of the release of Overwatch 2 (in part caused by hackers), DLCs for World of Warcraft etc. are the reason why many Blizzard fans were not particularly pleased with the news about the required Internet connection in the new Diablo. Especially since this time it applies even to people who are only interested in the single player mode (as a reminder: D4 is a pseudoMMO game, so to speak).
Open beta-testing of Diablo IV will take place from March 24-27, but the early access weekend will start tomorrow. For details, please see our previous post. The full version of the game will debut on June 6.
