Diablo 2: Resurrected Draws on Modding Output for Diablo 2
The developers working on Diablo 2: Resurrected admit that they drew a lot of inspiration when modifying the remake's mechanics from mods created for the original Diablo 2 by the community.
- The team responsible for Diablo II: Resurrected was inspired by the work of modders;
- Thanks to this, the best mechanic improvements were added to the remaster.
Diablo II: Resurrected will draw from the output of modders for the original Diablo II. Rob Gallerani from Vicarious Visions, the game's lead designer, admitted this in an interview with PCGamesN.
As we know, Diablo II: Resurrected will introduce several improvements to the gameplay which will bring the title to modern standards. Gallerani revealed that some of them were inspired by mods created for Diablo II. An example given in the interview is the increase in size of the cache from 24 to 100 slots and the option to share it between multiple characters on the same account. Why was it decided to have 100 slots and a 10x10 size? Out of convenience. Vendors in Diablo II use these sizes, so it was easier to move the ready element than to create it from scratch.
The project's lead designer also revealed the basic idea behind the team's approach to implementing the mechanic improvements in Diablo II: Resurrectred.
“When we approached quality of life in this game, we definitely wanted to take the route of making the game more accessible, but not easier. It is a nice kind of litmus test to know, ‘oh, this audience – the hardcore audience – they like these types of things.'”
Everything was ultimately based on selectively choosing what modders have created so far, and implementing modifications that will allow the game to not stand out from the competition in 2021. Vicarious Visions sees that a lot has changed in the hack 'n' slash genre, so the strength of the Diablo brand alone is not enough to make players appreciate their game.
