Steam’s Early Access program can be a double-edged sword. On one hand it can give great titles an opportunity to grow and expand, while some developers exploit it by having their productions live in EA limbo forever. Everything shows that Core Keeper belongs to the first of the mentioned groups. The popularity of its full release, not that long ago, surprised even the creators themselves. Despite very warm reception, many fans might have noticed that one, previously available, functionality is missing. The activity that is absent is of course fishing minigame. What happened? Why is it gone? Will it be back? Let’s find out!

Absence of fishing minigame in Core Keeper explained

With the proper release of Core Keeper, the playercount skyrocketed (via SteamDB), achieving its all-time peak. Not everything went well with it, unfortunately, as it introduced some bugs related to still not implemented crossplay that apparently causes crashes. We are used to having a lot of new features and mechanics when a game finally leaves Early Access, which usually happens alongside a huge content patch, and indeed that’s what happened in this case. Yet, it seems like not everything has been properly polished for that date as fishing minigame has been removed.

The truth is that this activity’s more interactive aspect has been gone since Core Keeper’s last free weekend (22-Aug-2024). The developers initially explained that it has been removed “to make fishing a better experience”, without a word of it coming back. Eventually, they have changed the narrative slightly alongside 1.0 release post, saying that “the fishing minigame has been removed to improve the experience based on player feedback”, adding information that fishing mechanic will be polished in the future updates. Some fans claim that the actual reason for this was that this minigame has been annoying, slowing progression, and too hard, yet it’s obviously not officially confirmed.

There has been no further communication about when we can expect the feature to come back. The creators still have to work on functionalities they have promised but are not fully operational yet, like previously mentioned crossplay, for example.

It is said, but with no certainty, that when it is reworked, it will be togglable, meaning that the minigame itself will be optional. Let’s see what the devs come up with. We can expect further updates on this matter so keep an eye out on future patch notes, but also by joining the game’s official Discord server. Have fun!
