We Know Roughly When Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Will Enter Preproduction

CD Projekt Group has revealed that proper work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, known by the codename Project Orion, will not start until next year.

The actual work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is expected to start in 2024. This is according to the information CD Projekt Group revealed during its regular investor call regarding the company's quarterly financial results, which was held recently.

According to the news, the sequel to the game - code-named Orion - will enter the "research and development phase" next year.

"We believe that the studio [in Boston - ed. note] will begin operations in early 2024, but we already have some expenses related to Project Orion and Project Hadar" Adam Kicinski, CEO of CD Projekt, said at the teleconference.

The expenses mentioned by Kicinski related to Project Orion could be, for example, those related to the game entering an early concept phase - which is planned was to take place in the ongoing 2023.

In addition, we can infer from the available information that:

  • sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will be in pre-production in 2024;
  • work on the project will take off in earnest after the release of Phantom Liberty;
  • the debut of the game is still a very distant matter.

According to the above information, it can be assumed that CD Projekt RED will still devote the remaining months of 2023 to the final "polishing" of the first Cyberpunk and will gradually delegate employees to the company's newly established branch in Boston.

However, before the future project set in the universe created by Mike Pondsmith becomes the apple of the studio's eye, we are facing a new installment of The Witcher, known for now only under the codename Project Polaris.
