Cyberpunk 2077 vs The Witcher 3 - Condition on Steam 2 Months After Launch

Two months after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, we take a look at the game's condition on Steam and compare its performance to that of The Witcher 3.

Wednesday will mark two months since the release of Cyberpunk 2077, so it's worth taking a look at how CD Projekt RED's latest work is doing on Steam and compare its achievements with those of REDs' most acclaimed title, The Witcher 3.

Player reception

Let's start with user reviews. Their overall average has remained at 78% positive reviews since the end of last year, but it is only 73% if we consider only the notes given in the last 30 days. The latter result is nothing to cheer about for the developers, but it's still better than the 71% that CP2077 had on launch day.

The Witcher 3 is much more appreciated by the players. In this case 98% of all Steam user reviews are positive, 96%, if we count only the last 30 days. On the other hand, in the first two months after the release 95% of the players gave the game a positive rating.

Activity results

Much more interesting numbers can be found in activity results. Sundays are usually the best days of the week for video games in this regard. Yesterday, at the hottest moment of the day, Cyberpunk 2077 was played on Steam by 47,272 people at the same time. This is a very big drop compared to the record of over a million users, set right after the launch.

Thus, the activity dropped more than twenty times. For comparison, in the case of The Witcher 3, right after the launch an activity record of 92 thousand people at the same time was set, and two months later the game achieved results of 18 thousand, so five times lower.

Almost six years have passed since the release of The Witcher 3, and the game is still being played on Steam by about 11 thousand people at the same time. Will Cyberpunk 2077 be getting similar results in 2025?

Of course, right now Cyberpunk 2077 is still doing much better than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Two months after its release, activity may have dropped twenty-fold, but it's still significantly higher than The Witcher 3 in the same period since its debut.

It should be remembered that Cyberpunk 2077 is a game without multiplayer mode, so it is difficult to expect that two months after the launch it would be able to attract hundreds of thousands of players. There's no denying, however, that from the perspective of pre-release expectations the current activity results are nevertheless disappointing.

At the time of writing this news, Cyberpunk 2077 is the 25th most popular game on Steam. However, among the games that bested it, only Tale of Immortal, the Chinese RPG released two weeks ago, is intended exclusively for single player.

Overall, Cyberpunk 2077's condition is not tragic, but the game is definitely performing below expectations. The reason for this is mainly the poor technical condition. The devs have released a lot of patches since the launch, but the game still has a lot of imperfections. On PC, the situation is somewhat saved by the availability of mods, but fans are unable to fix many fundamental issues present in the game.
