CD Projekt RED has shared the sales figures for Cyberpunk 2077. According to the published data, the game has shipped more than 13.7 million copies worldwide in 2020. This result is lower than the average of earlier forecasts of analysts gathered by PAP Biznes. These predictions amounted to 14.7 million copies.
More than half, or 56%, of the copies sold were PC versions. Releases for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are 28% and 17% respectively. The released data also reveals that the vast majority of players purchased the digital version of the game. The boxed edition of Cyberpunk 2077 was chosen by only 27% of buyers, not even 1/3 of all owners of CD Projekt RED's RPG.
Information about refunded copies of the game also appeared in the web. In the end, the studio had to spend only a little over 2 million USD on them. This translates into about 37 thousand refunded copies. On the scale of the entire sales result of Cyberpunk 2077 it is a negligible amount.
The studio also boasted about the effectiveness and scale of its marketing. The promotion of Cyberpunk 2077 covered 55 different advertising campaigns targeted at various markets around the world. This action translated into over 3.1 billion impressions of materials related to the promotion of the game. The total budget, after adding the costs of marketing was also revealed. The combined amount spent on the development of the game and its advertising amounted to USD 315 million.
The company also shared information on the scale of the undertaking which was the development of the game itself. A total of 530 developers from CD Projekt RED worked on Cyberpunk, but the entire project involved over 5200 people. The actors employed to record the dialogue lines alone numbered 2,000. This is due to the fact that the game was fully localized in 11 languages. In the end, 18 language versions were created.
In addition, the devs once again assured us that they are still working on further updates to the game. As they admitted themselves, they consider it as the second, next to The Witcher, pillar on which they want to build their studio.
