Cyberpunk 2077 is a Continuation to 2020, Not an Alternative Version
It turned out that Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2020, which means that CD Projekt RED will show this the same setting 57 years after the table-top original, and not its alternative version.
- Developer: CD Project RED
- Genre: RPG
- Platforms: PC, XONE, PS4
- Release date: hopefully as soon as possible.
Cyberpunk 2077 is based on Cyberpunk 2020, but the difference in title dates has led many fans to believe that the upcoming RPG from CD Projekt RED is set in an alternative version of the universe. It turns out, however, that the truth is different.
The matter was clarified by the creator of the original, Mike Pondsmith, who also helps to CD Projekt RED in the game's development. In response to a question from a fan, he stated that all productions are set in the same setting, which is gradually changing with each incarnation. The franchise presents a universe that started in Cyberpunk 2013 (the first version of the table-top RPG). This world then underwent changes in the 2020 edition, and on PCs and consoles we will see how these realities developed by 2077.
This approach has a significant impact on the franchise. Before that, it was possible to assume that the world of Cyberpunk 2077 would resemble the 2020 version, and the date was changed so that it would continue to look futuristic. Now that we know that the game shows the reality 57 years after the table-top original, it is obvious that there will be significant changes in the universe.
Let's recall that Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to PCs, Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Unfortunately, we still don't know when the game will debut. CD Projekt RED informed, however, that this year's E3 will be the most important in the history of the studio, so we hope that during the event we will learn the game's release date.
It is worth mentioning that a few days ago R. Talsorian Games announced that it is working on a new edition of the pen& paper RPG, which will be entitled Cyberpunk Red. The system is to launched on the market on August 1, this year.
