Game of Thrones Creators Comment on the Coffee Cup Slip-up
In the last episode of Game of Thrones, vigilant fans noticed a modern coffee cup in one of the scenes. The creators of the series referred to this situation and admitted that the slip-up was the result of an oversight.
One of the most frequently commented elements of yesterday's episode of Game on the Throne was a small detail, which can be seen at about 14 minutes and 45 seconds (HBO Go version). The thing in question is a very modern coffee cup, reminiscent of the take-away coffee cups from Starbucks, standing on the table in front of Daenerys. The sheer number of comments on the issue forced HBO to react. In an official press release, they referred to the situation in a humorous way (via Variety):
“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”
Hauke Richter, the artistic director of the series, commented on the case in a more serious manner and sent a message to Variety. In his opinion, nothing unusual happened. To quote his words:
“Things can get forgotten on set,” he wrote. “[The coffee cup error has been] so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.”
It is rather difficult to be surprised by such statements made by HBO representatives. It's better to confess to the slip-up and turn it into a joke than to explain it in a twisted way. On the other hand, this kind of behavior can provide arguments for those who believe that the mistake with a modern coffee cup was actually a deliberate marketing ad campaign for Starbucks (which was successful, judging by the popularity of Twitter tags). The argument for this theory is that the mug is really well visible and it is hard to believe that absolutely none of the crew, even the post-production people who had the possibility to remove the object through digital means, did not notice it.
Regardless of whether the coffee cup was a slip-up or a deliberate action, the fourth episode of the eighth season of Game of the Throne is over. This means that there are only two episodes left before the finale of the series. You can see the trailer of the penultimate episode above. The episode will take 80 minutes. It was directed by Miguel Sapochnik and written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss.
