It's been a while, but mod support is finally officially coming to Cities: Skylines 2. Colossal Order Studio has announced the early release of a map editor and game code modification tool, along with the debut of Beach Properties -- the first of the so-called asset packs, which will introduce 70 new objects to the game (via Steam / Paradox Interactive).

The premiere of the DLC will take place on March 25, which may be surprising, because just a week ago the developer claimed that we will have to wait a long time for official mod support.

Note that this won't be a full version of the modding tools, but only a beta. Nonetheless, two out of the three most important features will be available:

  1. the ability to create your own maps -- whether from scratch or by importing maps with terrain height data;
  2. option to make changes in the code for modifying game systems.

However, there will be a lack of tools for replacing assets, at least at the beginning. The Colossal Order team plans to release updates introducing new features and changes dictated by the Cities: Skylines 2 community.

Mods in CS 2 will only be accessible through the Paradox Mods platform as the developers didn't anticipate support for the Steam Workshop.

It should also be mentioned that along with Beach Properties and modding tools, the game received a major patch with fixes. This is intended to significantly improve the optimization of Cities: Skylines 2, especially on less efficient hardware configurations.
