Changes in LoL - Riot Will 'Kill' One of Oldest Heroes; Players Offer Condolences [UPDATE: Patch Available]

A preview of the latest League of Legends update - 12.7 - has hit the web. Fan reaction has been less than enthusiastic; fans of Ryze, the champion affected by the nerf, in particular, don't like the changes.

Update

Patch 12.7 debuted today. The full list of changes can be found on the official website of League of Legends. At the same time, we learned that the next patch - 12.8 - will debut in early May, as the upcoming 2022 Mid-Season Invitational in South Korea will be using this version.

Original message

Yesterday we got to know the list of champions and items that will change in the upcoming update to League of Legends. Patch 12.7 will bring buffs for characters such as Gwen, Pantheon, Yasuo, Yone, Wukong and many others (full list below). At the other extreme were the heroes that Riot Games decided to nerf: Ryze, Zeri, Lee Sin, and Jayce.

The planned list of changes was posted one of the designers working on LoL, known under the pseudonym The Truexy, on his Twitter.

To say that fans of Riot's MOBA are not pleased would be quite an understatement. Especially the group of players who main Ryze - the mage, who has once again been nerfed - complain about the changes.

The operation was successful, the patient died

Fans of the blue-skinned wizard, who was in the set of the original seventeen champions in the early days of LoL have no reasons to be happy. The skill Overload will be nerfed: The existing mana bonus, which provides shield and extra damage, among other things, will be reduced from 3 to 2%.

Although the change of one percentage point does not seem like a big deal, it's another weakening of the hero with what is already one of the lowest victory rates in the game and will certainly not improve his situation.

Full description of Ryze's skills can be found here.

On sub-reddit dedicated to League of Legends posts about the fate of the unfortunate mage are gaining popularity:

"I just wonder if Ryze's mains are doing well," writes user Ciscodiscoisvibing.

Reddit user J0rdian did not spare harsh words aimed at the developers:

"Riot doesn't need proof that something doesn't work. It's no secret that they [the developers - ed. note] have no idea what to do with him [Ryze - ed. note]; they've tried many times and failed just as many times. They've basically given up on him until they have some kind of plan for the character."

Player going by the handle HardstuckPlasticV, however, sees a positive aspect in this whole situation:

"Things are not good at the moment, but this brings us closer to a "rework". Every further nerf and drop in win rate is just more proof that this character is currently not working."

On the Reddit thread dedicated solely to Ryze, players have already begun sending condolences to to Ryze mains.

Quo vadis, Riot?

"Killing" Ryze is not the only issue players are complaining about when mentioning the upcoming update. League of Legends fans also dislike some of the improvements that have been announced: the most frequently cited are buffs for characters like Gankplank, Karthus or Yone.

It's clear that in a game with such a wide range of characters to choose from, it's impossible to please everyone while maintaining a reasonable balance of gameplay - but the reactions of players suggest that the announced changes are, to put it mildly, misguided.
