Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War Trailer Banned in China [Updated]
Last week's teaser trailer of Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War was banned in China. The reason for this decision is a short fragment showing the events that took place on June 4, 1989 on the Tian'anmen Square.
Update: Issues with the video did not escape Activision's attention. The company decided to modify the trailer. The original video was hidden, and instead of it there was a version shorter by one minute. It should be noted that this could have been influenced by the Chinese company Tencent, which owns 5% of the American giant.
What is interesting is that not only the fragments showing the events at Tian'anmen Square were cut from the trailer. Among other things, the initial charts, recalling the Soviet spy Yuri Bezmenov, disappeared. However, statements of the KGB agent were left.
Last Thursday, Activision presented the first trailer of Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War. It contains shots from more important events taking place during the Cold War. As it turns out, this material did not appeal to the Chinese authorities, who decided to ban it in the country (via Apple Daily). All this is due to a few seconds' fragment (you can see it at 00:33), which shows the events that took place at the Tian'anmen Square on June 4, 1989.
Since April 1989, student protests have been taking place at Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, where the demand was for democratization and economic development of China. However, the authorities did not want to make any concessions. This ultimately led to the forcible pacification of strikers by military using live ammunition and tanks. This took place during the night of June 3-4 of the same year. According to official data provided by the government, 241 people were killed. However, unofficial sources (including the Chinese Red Cross) state that there were many more victims. It is, therefore, safe to say that this is not a very commendable part of the history of the country.
At the moment, apart from the trailer, only artwork was published. The full announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War will take place on August 26.
