Blue Beetle is to be 'Cronenberg for Kids'? Director Explains

Blue Beetle promises to be an interesting production that will not be tied to the mainstream DC created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The film's director, Ángel Manuel Soto, talked about his vision for the movie and what he wanted to achieve. He placed great emphasis on the initial transformation that the main character, Jaime Reyes, undergoes after coming into contact with the titular Blue Beetle (via Variety).

Soto knew what to expect from the first transformation. The main character's body merges with the Beetle's exoskeleton, in what the director described as a 'Cronenberg for kids'. The famous filmmaker is known for vividly showing body transformations in his movies, and this is exactly what the director of Blue Beetle wanted to present to the audience, only in a child-friendly form.

However, that's not all, because Ángel Soto's words suggest that the whole movie is meant to be an homage to such classics as Indiana Jones or Mission: Impossible. The show will tell the story of "the first superhero who doesn't want his powers." Given that the production will not be linked to the emerging new DC cinematic universe, Soto had more wiggle space for his creation.

The upcoming work, however, may not be the only film about the titular superhero. In early June Xolo Mariduena, who plays the lead role, mentioned that if the movie is positively received, fans can expect more.

Blue Beetle will premiere as early as August 18, 2023.. The main character returns to his hometown and accidentally comes into possession of a mysterious device. After transforming into Blue Beetle, he gains completely new abilities.
