One of the most established and well-known game franchises is undoubtedly Call of Duty. Almost every year we get a new flavor of this military FPS. Just recently the new part dropped. It is subtitled Black Ops 6 and set at the end of Cold War era. Since productions from this series have considerably swell in size recently, there was a preload possible for some time. However, it posed problems for some of the fans. What is more, as we have arrived at the official release date, for some people BO6 seems to be simply not launching after clicking “Play” button on Steam. If you are one of the players affected by this issue, here you will see a deeper analysis of the problem.

BO6 not working on Steam explained

Paying $70 at launch for a game, we expect that everything will work perfectly. Sadly, some fans were waiting for BO6 to unlock only to find out that after clicking “Play” button on Steam it does nothing at all but changing label to “Launching” and back to “Play” again. How to make it work?

It’s not easy to determine the root cause, as many hardware and software configurations can differ vastly, yet everything shows that it is related to the location where the game has been installed. There’s an interesting observation made by reddit u/daniel97tom linking this issue to a bootstrapper (a piece of code responsible for initial launch of an application).

The user has found a log file simply named bootstrapper.log in BO6 installation location, which informs about the reason for unsuccessful start. Usually, you will see information about missing randgrid.sys file. The log shows the location of the file that the title expects it in. Simply copy it from the location where Black Ops 6 is installed to the directory that the production expects it. Alternatively, you can delete the file (make a copy of it first) and verifying game’s integrity. The exact same issue has been seen in other CoD titles.

Some fans also state that mashing the “Play” button eventually launches BO6. As strangely as it sounds (fortunately we don’t have to pay subscription for it), sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Either way, hopefully you will be able to launch BO6 and learn new troubleshooting method. Good luck!
