Black Ops 4 Battle Royale mode supports 20 players fewer than PUBG or Fortnite, but still more than its Battlefield 5 equivalent
Black Ops 4 battle royale mode named Blackout will only support up to 80 players, Treyarch's Dan Bunting confirmed. According to the developer, it was the best designer choice possible – but it it subject to change if necessary.
What do you call a battle royale mode that only supports 80 players instead of 100? Blackout. Yep, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 battle royale will only fit you and 79 other players on one map by design, but this designer choice isn’t just based on the first number that came to the devs’ minds. Treyarch’s Dan Bunting told gameinformer that battle royale actually feels better and more immersive now than when the studio was testing the mode out with 100 players flocking the map. And so:
We’re starting with 80 players, but we’ve gone higher than that. Whenever we launch a game as a beta or whatever, that’s the beginning of something. We’re going to be actively participating in the community and taking feedback, making changes and adapting, evolving the game as feedback rolls in. So there’s a lot that can go on that can happen beyond that first impact of the game going out there.
100 player cap’s comeback is still possible, then. But while power remains in the hands of the community, Black Ops 4 will most likely kick-off with a battle royale mode that’s 20 players short of PUBG and Fortnite: BR, but at the same time – supports 16 players more than Battlefield V’s Firestorm mode.
Perhaps we’ll have a chance to give Blackout a test drive in just a few days. PS4 pre-order-exclusive Black Ops 4 beta launches on September 10. Then, on September 14, follows an open PC beta. And then we wait until October 12, when the full game is due. It’s going to launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. So three platforms… but how many players?
