BioWare Lays Off 50 People to Become a 'More Focused and Efficient' Team

BioWare has reminded the public about itself with a new post. It's just a pity that instead of Dragon Age and Mass Effect, it was announced that about 50 people were laid off.

BioWare has published its first blog post in a long time. Unfortunately, it concerns not a new game, but the layoff of some 50 employees. We don't know their full list, but they include Jon Renish, technical director of the new Dragon Age.

As we read on the company's official website, future projects require a "more streamlined and focused studio." Change is "inevitable," and in practice this means the need for "reorganization." That is, in short, the lay off some of the creators, although the studio wants to make sure that as many people as possible find new positions in the company.

The studio also mentions a "long-term vision" for development, so that the team can "create unique, story-driven single-player adventures filled with vast worlds and rich characters." This includes the new Mass Effect and the upcoming Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, with assurances that the layoffs will not affect work on these projects.

Fans have not received BioWare's explanation with enthusiasm (via Twitter).

  1. After almost two months, the studio shared information not about new projects (for example, release dates or even game presentation announcements), but about layoffs. This did not improve the mood of gamers, which had previously been spoiled by other reports from the company (not even talking about the failure of Anthem).
  2. Some Internet users suspect that Electronic Arts is behind the decision and it is purely financially motivated. This has given them an excuse to complain about BioWare's condition in recent years. Especially in the context of the success of the new Baldur's Gate, a series we owe to this very studio.

Let's hope that the next entry will give fans no reason to complain.
