APEX LEGENDS IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Developer: Respawn Entertainment
  2. Publisher: Electronic Arts
  3. Genre: FPS
  4. Platforms: PC, XONE, PS4
  5. Release Date: February 4, 2019

Released in February, Apex Legends scored the best free-to-play debut in history. It seems, however, that the golden age of this project has come to an end at a rapid pace, as revenues have already dropped by 74%.

In February, Apex Legends generated revenue of USD 92 million. However, in April it was "only" 24 million dollars. This decline is obviously nothing new for those following this project. Already a few weeks ago it was loud about the decrease of interest in Twitch streams. The number of people searching for the title in Google has also decreased significantly.

In April, Apex Legends ranked among the top ten most profitable digital titles on both PCs and consoles. Nevertheless, the revenue of 24 million a month is still a considerable achievement. The only question is whether the devs will be able to stop the further drops.

The problem with Apex Legends is the relatively slow pace of development. Competitive Fortnite is much better in this respect, but the price is paid by Epic Games studio developers who are forced to work up to 100 hours a week. Respawn Entertainment team does not intend to torment its employees with crunch and relies on large seasonal updates instead of weekly changes. However, as you can see, the market is ruthless and with this approach it is difficult to fight for the leading position in the free-to-play category.

It is worth mentioning, however, that the devs still have one ace up their sleeves. The works on the mobile version of the brand are in progress. Both Fortnite and Playerunknown's Battlegrounds have been great successes on smartphones and tablets, so Apex Legends may be similar.
