AMD Discontinues Radeon 7
AMD decided to discontinue the production of Radeon VII graphics cards. This information is provided by the Cowcotland. The main reason is high production costs and the launch of the Navi family cards.
AMD Radeon VII - the first consumer GPU made in 7nm lithography - debuted on the market on February 7, this year. As you can easily count, it's been less than five months since then. According to the information provided by Cowcotland (and translated by TechPowerUp), AMD has just discontinues the model. Let us remind you that already in February a great surprise was caused by a small number of these devices available on the release day. The first reviews shed light on the chipset, which was to compete with the strongest competition proposal, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080.
It quickly turned out that the equipment from the AMD is slightly less efficient in games than the opponent's card. However, the biggest problem was high production costs, and thus expensive product (which rather did not fit the image of AMD, which for a long time has been fighting for customers at competitive prices). The end of production of this model is also conditioned by the release of the Radeon RX 5700 XT, which can and does have worse results in games (by about 5-12%), but is cheaper by almost $400....
Unlike the RX 5700 XT, the Radeon VII is based on a 7nm lithography but uses 16GB of HBM2 memory. It seems that the arrival of the Navi fmaily will end the time of the Vega architecture. Lower production costs, lower energy consumption and comparable performance - all in favor of the new technology. On store shelves (and on the Internet) you will probably still find the latest models of Radeon VII, but the price of several hundred dollars doesn't encourage to buy them.
