African-American pilots honored in Iron Wings, a WWII-themed air combat game
There hasn't been a game honoring the African-American pilots from The Tuskegee Airmen yet, but that may soon change thanks to Iron Wings. This WWII-themed air combat game is currently having a Kickstarter campaign run by Shadow Fighter creators.
Creators of the Amiga games Shadow Fighter and Gekido, Italian developer Naps Team, are making Iron Wings, an action-adventure flying shooter game set in the World War II. The title is going to offer a single player story campaign focused on the African-American pilots from The Tuskegee Airmen, i.e. the 332nd Fighter Group and 477th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Forces (thanks, Polygon!).
Iron Wings will feature two playable characters – Jack and Amelia – whom you will be able to control interchangeably, switching between the two at any moment, and give orders to the other one, which brings some tactical depth into this otherwise arcade shooter. In addition to aerial combat, the game will offer some ground missions, apparently built upon classic third-person shooter mechanics.
The plan is to release Iron Wings on PC in Q4 2017. However, depending on how the Kickstarter campaign goes, the game may also get Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions as well as full-fledged multiplayer. If you like the project, don’t forget to support the developers – there is still way to go before the crowdfunding goal, set on €100,000, is reached.
