Activision Makes More Money on PC Than Consoles, but Diablo 4 Could Change This
Consoles are no longer a priority market for Activision Blizzard. For a good few months now, the company has been making more money on PC.
Market trends like to change, and Activision Blizzard is a perfect example of this. The company has published a quarterly report, summarizing the period from January 1 to March 31 of this year. Compared to last year, the giant reported good results, with a significant increase recorded on PC in particular.
- In the first quarter of this year, the PC market brought the company $666 million in revenue, an increase of 74% over the same period of 2022..
- Earnings from desktop PCs turned out to be higher than from consoles. In this case, we are talking about $639 million.
It's already a trend, but Diablo 4 could stir things up
Such situations have occurred in the past (e.g., June-September 2021), but they were singular. The current nine-month streak (as noted by PCGamer) seems to indicate that the trend will continue for longer.
- Responsible for such a good period for PC is primarily Blizzard. While the creators of Diablo are earning half of what the Call of Duty brand alone does, as much as 72% of those profits are generated on PC, and only 8% on consoles. Revenues from CoD are distributed quite differently - 59% from consoles, 26% from PC and 15% from the mobile market.
- In addition to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Overwatch 2, which were the main drivers of revenue growth from PC, Activision in its report also singled out World of Warcraft: Dragonflight and Diablo Immortal, which are titles that are not available on consoles.
Consoles are expected to rebound from with the June release of Diablo IV. This will be the first installment in the series to be released simultaneously on PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
