7 Years Ago Rockstar Announced Red Dead Redemption 2; Lack of PC Version Hurt Most [Update]
Today marked the 7th anniversary of the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2. The title from Rockstar Games has since won the hearts of many gamers and sold tens of millions of copies.
UPDATE: After the announcement of a game, comes usually its release. In the case of RDR2 gamers waited more than two years for this event. We did not wait that long to update of this news.
Red Dead Redemption 2 officially celebrates the 5th anniversary of its release! We congratulate Rockstar Games on a great title, while hoping for an imminent presentation of GTA VI and the first mentions of Red Dead Redemption 3. In turn, we recommend you to fire up the adventures of Arthur Morgan again - there are few games on the market that provide such attractions as RDR2.
7 years have passed since the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2. The story, loved by millions of gamers around the world, has received a very large number of positive reviews and can compete without shame for the title of the best game released in the last ten years.
Official announcement from Rockstar Games
For the first time, Rockstar Games has hinted at the release of a new installment of Red Dead in October 2016. At the time, the devs published a graphic on social media, showing the company's logo in the now distinctive RDR2 colors.
This is how our readers reacted to these Rockstar posts at the time:
"This is the second time in my life that I'm really genuinely looking forward to a game announcement. The first was Sid Meier's Pirates! from 2004 :)."
"I am deeply hoping for the next installment."
"After all, it's immediately clear that some kind of Halloween event they are preparing in GTA V Online. Why should they make a new game when players have pocketed billions of dollars."
Let's point out that some people also suggested Rockstar is working on a remaster of the first part, Red Dead Redemption. However, a day before the official announcement, the developers uploaded another image - this time it showed seven characters against the backdrop of a setting sun. By then it was almost certain that players would get a new adventure in the Wild West.
Everything became clear on October 18, 2016. On that day Rockstar officially announced Red Dead Redemption 2 and set the release for fall 2017.
The lack of a PC version hurt players the most
Needless to say, admirers of the game reacted very enthusiastically to the news. The excitement dimmed a bit two days later, when the the first trailer for the game was released.
Many gamers were worried that the new Red Dead would skip personal computers. As it turned out, these were valid concerns, as the developers did not include this platform in the context of the official release. The title was to hit only Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Under the material revealing Red Dead Redemption 2 many users pointed out the lack of a PC edition of the game and repeatedly asked whether the developers plan to release it for this platform as well.
"Will the game also be released on PC?"
Delayed release
Fans did not live to see the release of RDR2 in 2017. Rockstar decided to delay the debut in order to fine-tune its game as much as possible.
In May 2018, the CEO of Take-Two, owner of Rockstar Games, announced that the game would not be delayed any further. The final debut date was set for the end of October 2018, more than a year later than the original date.
PC owners had to arm themselves with even more patience. The title finally made it to PC, but it didn't happen until November 2019. The port was not received very well; it had quite a few technical issues, for which the developers later had to apologize. It is worth noting that the debut of the second part of Red Dead Redemption on Steam was also not very successful.
Red Dead Online
A few months after the release of RDR2, the Red Dead Online module was released, in which multiple users could play simultaneously. Unfortunately - the online experience was not as engaging as Arthur Morgan's adventure (mainly due to poor post-release support), so the users decided to protest the developer's progressing uninvolvement by dressing up as clowns.
The following months did not bring much improvement. Players continued to give clear signals to Rockstar Games that the online Wild West adventure is disappointing.
Although the developers tried to further develop the title, they did not have a clear idea what to do with it. As a result, fans prepared a "funeral" for Red Dead Online on social media. Thanks to this, the developers revived and released an update, which provided, among other things, new missions.
The ultimate success and one of the best games of the decade
Nevertheless, it was worth waiting longer for Red Dead Redemption 2. Numerous editors, including us, gave Rockstar's title the top score.
The current average of 109 reviews on Metacritic is as high as 97/100 (PS4 version), which is one of the highest scores in the history of the gaming industry.
The situation is similar on Steam. On Valve's platform, as many as 90% of the more than 460,000 reviews are positive.
Currently, many gamers consider Arthur Morgan to be one of the best protagonists, and Red Dead Redemption 2 as one of the best games of 2010-2020, although it did not win the title of game of the year at the The Game Awards (the 2018 award went to God of War).
"The best open world ever created," as one Reddit user wrote
"I think this is one of the best titles I've ever played and will remain in this position for a long time."
According to emerging information Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold nearly 60 million copies so far. While this is a powerful result, the game is still far short of catching up with the sales of GTA V (about 180 million copies sold).
It is worth mentioning that Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally released only for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and later for PC. Thanks to backward compatibility, the title can also be played on the latest generation of consoles.
In addition, let's point out that there are rumors about work on the third installment of the brand in question. However, for now there is nothing to set your mind to and you should wait for more concrete news.
