4 Years and Great Sales: Obsidian Celebrates The Outer Worlds Anniversary
The Outer Worlds has had its problems, but four years after its release, the RPG that is the spiritual heir to Fallout: New Vegas has achieved excellent sales.
Four years ago, we got a new RPG brand from Obsidian Entertainment. During that time The Outer Worlds has sold 5 million copies, which the developer boasted on the occasion of the anniversary of its release (via Twitter / X).

The developers definitely have reasons to be happy, if you skip the last year. 5 million copies is an excellent result for a new IP. True, we're talking about the spiritual heir to the iconic Fallout: New Vegas, and this is enough incentive for fans who have been hoping for a return to New Vegas for many years.
Very good ratings, high popularity and a fly in the ointment
Nevertheless, player nostalgia alone is not enough to achieve such a success. Fortunately The Outer Worlds excelled even as a stand-alone game. The title was warmly received by reviewers and players alike, although few would call it a masterpiece (Metascore: 82/100 on PC, 85/100 on XOne and PS4, 65/100 on Switch).
TOW also never gained as much popularity as other big RPGs of recent years, with this year's hits in the lead. The popularity record from three years ago was just over 20,000 concurrent players on Steam.
Of course, there was also a fly in the ointment (a rather big one): the launch of the refreshed version, called Spacer's Choice Edition, did not go well. Suffice it to say that the developer apologized to the players for it. More precisely: for the abysmal optimization of this version and for forcing purchasers of the original to pay extra if they wanted to enjoy the improvements from this version (not only visual).
Fortunately, at least the developers did not remove the original release of the game. Both versions of The Outer Worlds are currently discounted on Steam.
It is also fair to add that the "improved" edition has partially regained the trust of players. "Mixed" ratings on Steam are nothing to be proud of, but it's still better than the "mostly negative" reviews it enjoyed six months ago. Nevertheless, it would be good if The Outer Worlds 2 would make up for the problems with Spacer's Choice Edition.
