25 million copies of The Witcher games sold by the end of 2016
CD Projekt announced that 25 million copies of The Witcher games have been sold by the end of 2016. The overwhelming majority of this number comes from The Witcher 3 and its two add-ons.
The Witcher video game trilogy sold 25 million copies worldwide by the end of 2016, CD Projekt revealed in their yearly financial report (via Bankier.pl). In 2016 alone the company noted the revenue of PLN 583 million (USD 148 million), which is a drop from PLN 798 million (nearly USD 203 million) in 2015. Note, however, that 2015 was the year when The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its first expansion Hearts of Stone launched.
Obviously, the overwhelming majority of these 25 million comprises The Witcher 3 and its two add-ons (the red bars on the chart; the black ones are the first two games). In total, the third Witcher game and its expansions generated the revenue of over PLN 1 billion (roughly USD 250 million), 96% of which came from outside the borders of Poland.
With The Witcher trilogy now wrapped up, next in line is Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. CD Projekt sees much financial potential in this free-to-play game featuring microtransactions. With Gwent, the Poland-based company also wants to make their way into e-sports. Currently in the closed beta, the title is going to get new cards and game modes soon. There is also Cyberpunk 2077, but no new info was shared on that.
