21 Studio Ghibli Movies Coming to Netflix But Not in US or Japan

The Netflix streaming platform will feature iconic animated films from the Japanese studio Ghibli. From the first of February, we will be able to see My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday or Tales From Earthsea, among others.

Anime lovers paying for Netflix's subscription have few reasons to complain. The popular streaming platform features numerous films and animated series straight from Japan. Soon this library will grow even bigger. Netflix has acquired the rights to distribute the titles created by the iconic studio Ghibli outside of Japan and the USA, which might be bad news for some of you folks.

First positions from Ghibli will appear on Netflix on February 1. These will be Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, Ocean Waves and Tales from Earthsea. On March 1, the platform will add the following movies Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Arrietty and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. From April 1, people paying for access to Netflix will be able to see Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises and When Marnie Was There (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Howl's Moving Castle is one of the most iconic animations from studio Ghibli.

All of these films will probably be shown with subtitles. It has not yet been confirmed whether they will also receive native dubbing or lecturing in various countries. However, it is very likely, as there are as many as 20 language versions in preparation.

Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 after the success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Its "founding fathers", who dreamed of changing the animation market, were Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, Yasuyoshi Tokuma and Hayao Miyazaki, who is often called the "Japanese Disney". The studio boasts a variety of awards, including five Oscar nominations (and one statuette for Spirited Away). The appearance of Ghibli's films on Netflix therefore isn't good news only for anime fans, but also for animation and cinematography in general.
