Game riddles
The riddles in this game are mostly about finding the given symbol in the gameworld, using portals to alter the reality and completing objects with missing parts. The last type of riddles can be somewhat tricky - in a few places in the game you can for example see a bridge with missing pieces, which you then can complete with different parts.
Beware of the black mark (curse)
The protagonist was marked by the darkness, and now, every time she dies, the mark on her arm grows. If the darkness reaches hear head, the game will end, and you will not be able to continue the gameplay. Don't worry about it too much though - the mark grows fast at the beginning, but the farther it gets, the slower it grows. On top of that, the game is being constantly balanced - if the given fragment is difficult for you, the game will adjust the difficulty itself.
Look for the Collectibles
There are two types of these in the game - monuments with runes and a hidden face of Senua's mother. The first type is rather easy to find, and it also shows you how many runes you have found (if you look at the rune-ring around it, you will see that some letters are white - these have been found and crossed out). As concerns the mother's faces - you have too look carefully through the environment; she often blends in and it takes a while to recognize her.
Change Combat difficulty
The game's difficulty is set to "auto" by default. If you will handle combat well, the difficulty will increase to keep you challenged. If you will die often, it will make the fights a bit easier. You can adjust some settings in the menu.
Use focus mode in combat
This isn't an obvious mechanic, but you can use a focus mode in combat. From time to time, if you do a series of complete combos, successful dodges etc, a glowing rune will appear on the screen, signalizing that you're able to enter the focus mode by pressing the right key, which will slow down time. That can be very useful, especially during boss fights - sometimes some enemies are immune to attacks, and the only way to hurt them is in focus.
Play in headphones.
In order to fully enjoy the game and be able to feel that the voices in the protagonist's head are actually there, you have to play in headphones - as says the tip on the beginning of the game. The audiovisual layer of the game is really great. In addition, voices sometimes would help you, so it is good for you to hear their instructions accurately.
Combat tips
Below you will find some tips for combat, which will help you more quickly master skills useful for defeating enemies:
- perfect block - as in many other games, you can perform a perfect block in Hellblade. In order to do it, you have to press the Guard key (left CTRL/RB) as late as possible before the enemy attacks. This will let you riposte with a strong combination of attacks or to deflect an attack towards the enemy.
- the kick - this is useful against enemies with shields, who otherwise can parry your attacks. Use interaction button (F/A) to do that.
- charge - if you press the sprint button (Shift/LB) during a fight - combined with a strong or fast attack, this lets you quickly shorten the distance between you and your enemy.
- falling in combat. If the protagonist gets knocked down, you can press the attack keys (LMB/RMB or X/Y) in order to make her stand up and avoid the final attack - if you manage to do that, you will be able to continue the fight.
