The Return is the subtitle of the first official extension to X2 The Threat, whose market debut took place at the end of 2003. The whole game introduces to the game not only a number of completely new elements, but also improves the functioning of options existing in the basic version of the described space simulator.
X2 The Return begins a few weeks after the end of the plot X2 The Threat. The last of the great battles (Omycron Lyrae) ended fatally for the Argonian fleet. It was almost completely destroyed and its survivors dispersed all over the X universe. The Khaak race has gone on a massive offensive - its troops don't spare any of the factions and don't give any respite to the defenders of the star order.
What is more, a mysterious ship with camouflage capabilities (stealth technology) appeared in the comic space. Nobody knows where he came from, who commands him and what his goals are. In turn, an ancient machine with an unexplored effect gets into the hands of Yaki pirates. The situation seems hopeless. With no other option, Argoni turn to Jules Brennan, the protagonist of X2 The Threat, for help. In short, he must save the X universe breeds.
Among the tasks, which the creators of the add-on have set for the players are: escorting Terracorp convoys, regular expansion of the existing network of factories, numerous offensives/defensives directed against enemy forces, and secret spying missions. Particularly noteworthy is the introduction of the possibility to combine a number of smaller centres into one larger factory complex (significant acceleration of works, more frequent inflows of funds allocated for further fighting). Moreover, the authors will enable players to build their own command centre (allowing them to set up a complex strategy for future actions), and will also provide them with a number of new star ships and weapons (rocket defence systems, stronger lasers, etc.). There was also a slight modification of the game interface (even more intuitive; fewer problems with switching between windows) and the introduction of fully definable keyboard shortcuts, which significantly improve the dynamic giving of commands during combat.
