WWF SmackDown! is the first installment of the famous series of sports games based on the license of the popular wrestling federation. This is also the first title of its kind released by THQ, which took over the license from Acclaim Entertainment.
Mechanics
The players have more than thirty fighter representing the World Wrestling Federation at their disposal. Among them, we have the most famous fighters to appear in ring, such as Kane, The Rock, Triple H, Stone Cold, Mankind or Big Show. Each player is equipped with his own entry sequence, as well as characteristic taunts or special attacks. Players can fight in several types of matches, in which two to even four wrestlers participate at the same time. Battles differ in rules and goals to be achieved. Some assume the use of items in combat, while others take place in a cage.
The combat mechanics developed by Yuke is relatively easy to learn, but at the same time difficult to master. The players can attack with traditional punches and kicks, as well as throws and tricks, depending on the situation in the ring and the player's key combination. At any time, the player can also use the key responsible for a counter and, for example, use the ropes to carry out a different type of attack.
Game modes
WWF SmackDown! offers several fun modes and enables up to four players to fight at once. The basic module is the Season, in which the selected fighter tries to reach the first place in the ranking and win all the belts, participating in and winning subsequent events. In this mode, it is possible to develop the skills of the selected wrestler and unlock subsequent special attacks for them. The game also has an extensive character editor, where everyone can create their own alter ego or dream wrestler - a new WWF star.
Technical aspects
Prepared by Japanese studio Yuke, the game is strongly based on WWF license. The fully three-dimensional game can boast well-recreated players, as well as the use of their real entry sequences or comments.
