Wizards & Warp Drives is a 2D arcade space shooter. It was produced by an independent studio, The Men Who Wear Many Hats, who have a successful Organ Trail account.
The action of the game begins in the magic of a typical fantasy land. A dark wizard decides to conquer the world. A group of heroes, who present a typical pattern for this genre, learns about his plan. It consists of a woman-mage, a human warrior, an elven and a dwarf. Unfortunately, they reach the sorcerer a little too late, as this has already begun a forbidden ritual. Luckily, the spell is not entirely successful, and the wizard himself, as well as his minions, the dragon and the characters themselves, are thrown into space. Our team quickly finds a ship for themselves and decides to try again to thwart the sorcerer's plans.
The creators did not take the seriousness seriously and instead focused on a very humorous atmosphere. However, this does not mean that the game itself is simple. The action is shown from a bird's eye view and we steer a small boat exploring an open-structure galaxy. The control is reminiscent of Asteroids-style automatic shooters. For long-distance expeditions, we are assisted by a subspatial drive that allows us to travel at ultra-light speeds.
The game is not only about exploring the cosmos. Instead, we spend most of our time fighting. Apart from small fighters, we often have to deal with huge cruisers filling several screens. The system of their hull and armament is generated randomly, which ensures a large variety of models. At first, our ship is equipped only with a simple cannon, but then we will install powerful lasers and rocket launchers in it. It also did not take away the possibility of landing on planets. In addition to playing alone, there is also a cooperation mode for up to four players, each of which controls their own ship.
