Wipeout 3 is the next instalment of a series of dynamic racing games set in the realities of science fiction, in which super-fast cars with anti-gravity drive compete. Game was developed by Liverpool-based Psygnosis studio, which decided not to make any major changes to the game's mechanics.
Mechanics
Wipeout 3 tells the story of a futuristic racing series, which involves corporations exhibiting antigravity-powered cars. There are eight teams, including FEISAR, Auricom, Piranha and AG Systems, whose vehicles differ not only in appearance, but also in statistics. As part of the competition for the championship they face each other on eight tracks built in different parts of Mega City.
The authors did not change the model of play. Again, players must test themselves on winding and narrow tracks, trying to take the highest positions and avoiding destruction by rivals. This time it is also crucial to maintain the right pace and reach successive checkpoints in the set time. Players who fail to do so are eliminated from further competition.
Each participant on the track can use a shield to protect their vehicle from mechanical damage, as well as an array of weapons to eliminate opponents. While the action is fast-paced and frenetic, precision use of the airbrakes is also essential to win through tight corners and chicanes. The developers have added an element of strategy to the third installment with a "hyper-boost" drive enhancement that allows you to reach much higher speeds, but also draws energy from the barriers, leaving your vehicle vulnerable to damage. The barriers themselves can be regenerated during pit stops, but they take up valuable time, greatly reducing your chances of victory.
Game modes
In Wipeout 3, the Liverpool-based designers have provided several fun game modes. In addition to the traditional league and single races on selected tracks, players can also take part in a multi-round tournament, where the results of individual races contribute to the general classification, or test themselves in a series of challenges on designated tracks. Alternatively, there is an "Eliminator" mode, where the aim is to destroy your rivals and survive as long as possible on the track. For the first time in the series' history, it is also possible to duel with a second player on a split screen. The tracks in this mode have been slightly modified due to the limited capabilities of the console.
Technical aspects
Wipeout 3 is a sci-fi 3D racing game with improved 480i graphics and new animations. The authors have worked closely with The Designers Republic graphics studio, which designed the menus and icons, giving the whole game a minimalist and eye-catching style. The highlight of the game is again the soundtrack, which includes songs by artists such as Sasha, The Chemical Brothers, Orbital or MKL. The game lived to see a special edition, which contains a number of extras, including new tracks.
