Winterfall PC

Winterfall is an action RPG with strategy game features. It is set in an open world and it was developed by independent studio Clan Latria. The game is the debut title of the French developer.

Plot

Winterfall takes place in the fantasy realm of Anor, inspired by ancient and medieval Europe. For ages, it was ruled by an empire called the Old Kingdom. However, at some point, the empire started to fade and its citizens divided into separate factions scattered across the world. This caused differences to grow between these factions. During the game, the players assume the role of a leader of one of three tribes that decide to return to the home region and restore its former glory.

Mechanics

The action in Winterfall is presented from a third-person perspective. During the game, the players are traveling through a vast and varied realm (on foot or on a mount), meeting its more or less hostile inhabitants (and helping them in trouble, trading with them or even conducting wars against hostile groups), and searching for valuable resources, traits of ancient civilization and its knowledge. The game also features a crafting system that enables the players to create various items to use or sell.

In addition to that, battles are an important aspect of the game. The players will face forces of opponents and aggressive animals. The battles are fought in real time and during them, the players can use melee weapons (knives, swords, axes, spears) and ranged weapons (like bows).

The above-mentioned resources are useful when the players decide to manage their Asylum, the safe haven of the tribe. In this unusual strategy mode, the camera presents the action from a top-down perspective and the player is tasked mostly with constructing new buildings and transforming the haven into an actual temple or fortress. The latter choice might be wise if the players make many enemies that might decide to perform a large-scale attack.

Contrary to other RPG games, in Winterfall the players aren’t controlling only a single character. The protagonist created at the beginning becomes older during the game and finally, he dies (in battle or because he becomes too old). Before he passes away, he can create a family and its members can take advantage of the legacy of their ancestors. Players’ actions can impact the trouble the new generations will have to face. This enables the players to control members of various professions – it is possible to start the adventure as a powerful warrior, and then assume the role of an adventure seeker or a craftsman, and finally became a wandering bard.

Technical aspects

Winterfall features a three-dimensional, cel-shaded graphics. The locations feature varied topography, buildings and types of plants. The soundtrack of the game builds a tune of a great adventure.
