A sandbox action game in which you play as a ship captain and strengthen your position on seas and oceans, while sailing across a procedurally generated world. During the adventure you keep capturing specific strategic points and repel enemy units controlled either by AI or other players. You can also reach your goal through skillful diplomacy and trading, or by becoming a feared pirate.

Windward PC is a sandbox action game with a procedurally-generated world, in which you play as a ship captain and set out to conquer seas and oceans. The game was developed by a Canadian indie studio Tasharen Entertainment, founded by a former Gameloft programmer Michael Lyashenko.

Mechanics

Windward PC combines elements of seemingly unrelated classic games: Sid Meier’s Pirates and Diablo. Core gameplay is about exploring randomly generated world on board of your vessel and taking control over strategic points (e.g. harbors). On your way, you also have to repel attacks of enemy ships controlled either by AI or other players. At the same time the game gives you a full freedom of play and of choosing the way to success. Depending on your preferences you can go for diplomacy, trade and pure exploration, or become a feared pirate.

As you roam the seas, you collect resources used for upgrading your ship. The upgrades are divided into three separate trees, focusing on offense, defense and support. As you make progress and expand your trading opportunities, the game offers more diverse quests of increasing difficulty. As a reward for doing them you get more and more resources and unique items.

Game modes

Windward PC lets you play alone, however, from the very start the game had been developed with the focus on multiplayer, and this is where it really spreads its wings, giving players a score of possibilities. Similarly to most MMO strategies, Windward lets you make alliances with other players and together face increasingly difficult challenges or fight for dominance with rival teams.
