Westerado: Double Barreled Description
Westerado: Double Barreled for PC and XONE is an action game taking place in a western setting. The game was developed by Ostrich Banditos, and released by Adult Swim Games. The project began its course as a free-to-play browser game, which was then developed to a level of a fully-fledged commercial title.
Plot
We are taken to the American Frontier (Mid-Western United States during XIX), while the plot has some elements consistent with the spaghetti western genre. The player assumes the role of a veteran gunslinger who had managed to leave his troublesome past behind. Unfortunately, his past catches up to him when his family is murdered by an unknown assailant. Full with heart-burning passion, the hero embarks on a journey to find the culprit and get his revenge.
Mechanics
The action is seen from a top-down camera. Our main goal is to explore the world in search of clues that will help us learn the identity of the killer and his current location. The player has a list of possible suspects, which becomes shorter with each investigated individual. Interestingly enough, the identity of the murderer changes with each playthrough.
Even if the search for the murder is our main objective, the world is filled with secondary missions and optional activities which offer rewards such as money or valuable information. The game contains an interesting interrogation mechanic that allows us to get information from encountered characters. Aside from a simple conversation, we can interrogate, accuse, or even threaten our targets. We are completely free to proceed as we see fit, as the world will adjust to our actions at will. For example, the player can simply kill any encountered character without interrupting the flow of the game, while some of the decisions can lead to extermination of entire villages.
