War of Enlightenment is a completely free online historical strategy game written by the independent Finnish artist Timo Hannukkal. The WoE concept strongly resembles the once popular multiplayer games played with the use of mail servers (so-called PBEM - Play-By-EMail). An ambitious creator serves us a similar entertainment - he himself maintains a dedicated server, which sends and receives logs with moves and processes movements in the game.

To start the game, just download the client package from the official website of the project, install it and then register on the game server, choosing one of the two offered game cycles - faster (7 turns per week) and quieter (3 turns per week). All that remains is to wait patiently until a full twenty enthusiasts gather - as many players take part in every game. The game takes us to the Europe of the 17th century and allows us to take control of one of the 20 countries - among which we can find both the superpowers (including France, England, Sweden, Poland, the Ottoman Empire, Russia), as well as lands of somewhat lesser historical importance (including Transylvania, Morocco, Tunisia, Mamelucy).

Although the program is free and written in principle by one person, the player will not be able to complain about boredom. His head is responsible for the comprehensive management of the state - from trade, through economy and production, to military intervention, including at sea. However, the greatest emphasis has been placed on extensive diplomacy - with so many potential opponents, the key to success often turns out to be wise, lasting alliances and prudent, calculating foreign policy. In addition, each nation has its own distinctive set of troops. Geographical, political and social conditions are not insignificant either - the author tried to accurately reflect historical realities. Given the strong competition from living opponents, the fight for victory is long and very difficult, but it is worth trying - the Finnish creator on his website, in a special Hall of Fame section, because he keeps the ranking of players updated on an ongoing basis.

Before we start online strategy buoys with strategy enthusiasts from all over the world, it's worth getting acquainted with the rules of the game and the user interface - a standard game client also allows you to play without using the Internet. However, in order to fully enjoy the game with a computer, you already have to pay an additional fee (about 30 EUR), because the free version in this mode only allows you to play Austria. The money earned in this way is spent mainly on financing the maintenance of a dedicated multiplayer game server.
