The Thaumaturge Review - Not Only a Fine RPG, It’s Also a Wonderful Time Machine
Step aside, The Witcher! There is a new RPG game in town to promote Poland. The Thaumaturge may be no match for CD Projekt’s work in terms of renown and scale but it’s way bolder when it comes to having that certain “Polish” feel. Gameplay is decent too.

The Thaumaturge blew my mind. Since Vampyr, I've missed a dark tale that captivates with its sad and gloomy city atmosphere. This time, we're dealing with Warsaw, which makes this title even more appealing to explore. The biggest flaw of it seems to be the combat system, which requires significant refinement. Despite that, I still had a lot of fun.
IGN: 8 / 10 by Jarrett Green
The Thaumaturge is a slow, text heavy caper that is often curious and sometimes captivating, weaving revolutionary labor politics and mysticism together to create a unique and charming piece of historical science fiction.
The main pros of the game
- Engaging Setting: The game is set in early 1900s Warsaw, which is richly detailed and immersive, capturing the socio-political atmosphere of the time.
- Compelling Story and Characters: The narrative is praised for its depth, with interesting characters, particularly the protagonist Wiktor and Rasputin, who add to the intrigue. The writing is generally well-received.
- Unique Gameplay Mechanics: The integration of Salutor abilities and the psychometric investigation system offers a unique twist on detective work.
- Good Graphics and Art Direction: The visuals are noted as beautiful, with well-designed environments that reflect the historical setting.
- Multiple Endings: The game features various endings based on player choices, enhancing replayability.
- Soundtrack: The music complements the atmosphere well and contributes to the immersion.
The main cons of the game
- Repetitive Combat: Many users find the turn-based combat system to be simplistic and lacking variety, leading to a feeling of monotony.
- Automated Detective Work: The investigative mechanics are criticized for being too easy, as players often just need to click on highlighted objects without engaging in deeper deduction.
- Performance Issues: Some players report bugs, crashes, and optimization problems, particularly with NVIDIA graphics cards.
- Inconsistent Voice Acting: The quality of voice performances varies significantly, with some characters being well-voiced while others detract from the experience.
- Linear Gameplay: The story is described as mostly linear, with limited player agency in how to approach quests and interactions.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- Deeper Detective Mechanics: Users express a desire for more engaging and less automated investigative gameplay that requires real deduction skills.
- Variety in Combat: Players wish for more depth in combat mechanics, including a broader range of enemy types and more strategic options in battles.
- Character Interaction: Some reviews mention a lack of meaningful interactions with NPCs outside of main quests, making the world feel less alive.
- Enhanced Customization: There is a call for more character customization options and varied skill trees to allow for more personalized gameplay experiences.
- Improved Quest Management: Users suggest a better system for tracking and managing quests, as well as clearer indicators for quest progression.
Summary
- Overall, while The Thaumaturge is appreciated for its story, setting, and unique concepts, it faces criticism for its gameplay mechanics and some technical issues. Many players see potential for improvement and express hope for future updates or sequels.

The Thaumaturge Description
The Thaumaturge (earlier known as Vitriol) is an RPG set in an alternate 20th century Warsaw. The game was developed by the Polish studio Fool's Theory, previously known for working alongside the Belgian Larian Studios on games such as Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, as well as for creating Seven: The Days Long Gone.
Plot
The Thaumaturge is set in 1905's Warsaw. It's a multicultural metropolis, where while the upper classes hold lavish parties, the criminals deal in dark alleys. Reigned by the Russian Tsardom, the city is a melting pot, inhabited by Polish townspeople, Jewish merchants, Russian soldiers and many others.
It's also the territory of the titular thaumaturges - people with supernatural abilities, able to perceive and use Salutors, esoteric entities. The game's protagonist, Wiktor Szulski, is one such thaumaturge, here in Warsaw to handle family matters. Using his abilities, he discovers the secrets of the city and its people.
Though the story is mostly fictional, it features appearances of real historical figures.
Mechanics
The Thaumaturge is an isometric game. The player traverses the occupied streets of Warsaw, completing quests, talking to characters and making moral choices. We can wield the Salutors to our benefit while exploring, manipulating other characters and fighting enemies.
Combat is turn-based, letting us wield different weapons, firearms and supernatural abilities. The latter let us deal direct damage and inflict negative statuses on enemies. As we progress through the game, we develop the protagonist and face greater challenges. Wiktor must be cautious, as the stronger he gets, the more his thaumaturge powers drive him to madness...
Technical aspects
The Thaumaturge runs on the Unreal Engine 5. The game's atmospheric artstyle and soundtrack effectively recreate the feeling of living in an early 20th century city.
