An action car game maintained in the style referring to the American culture of the 70s of the 20th century. The production tells the story of a conflict between two groups of drivers and allows you to take part in spectacular battles with various vehicles on large maps.
The first installment of racing action games series, in which various vehicles equipped with weapons are engaged in deadly battles on large maps. Released on PS1, the title stands out from the competitive Twisted Metal thanks to the stylistics, referring to the 1970s. This is a debut title by American studio Luxoflux, which later became famous, among others, with the True Crime series.
Story
United States, 1970s. As a result of the fuel crisis, the country is on the verge of collapse. It is becoming more and more difficult for the authorities to keep order and stop the waves of protests. Meanwhile, the powerful OMAR consortium plans to take advantage of the situation in order to get rid of all competition and control the entire fuel market. They hire a group of drivers to terrorize the south-western states and ensure the collapse of other companies. A group called Vigilantes forms against the mercenaries, trying to prevent chaos.
Mechanics
Vigilante 8 is an arcade game in which the players sit behind the wheel of a selected, armed vehicle and take part in battles on various types of maps. The camera presents action from a third-person perspective. The devs have put several types of vehicles, including tug, muscle-cars, buggies, pick-ups and military terrain at the players' disposal. The battles take place on maps in various settings, from a city full of casinoes, through a factory, a huge dam, and airport, to the Grand Canyon. On each of them there are unique items that can be used to damage enemies, as well as weapon caches to collect. Among the available types of weapons, we have self-guiding rockets, flamethrowers or mines.
Game modes
Vigilante 8 enables you to play in each of the available modes alone or with another player on a split-screen - both competing and cooperating with each other. The Arcade option lets you select any board and set the number of opponents to quickly start playing.
Technical aspects
The distinguishing feature of the game from Luxoflux is the setting. Vigilante 8 refers to the seventies of the last century with projects of characters, cars, and soundtrack.
