Vernal Edge is a 2D fantasy metroidvania platformer. The game emphasizes exploration and combat against hordes of enemies using melee weapons and destructive spells.
Vernal Edge is an action platformer metroidvania. It's the debut game of Hello Penguin Team.
Plot
The game is set in a fantasy kingdom of Haricot. Many years ago the land was mysteriously lifted into the air, turning into an archipelago of floating islands.
The game's protagonist is Vernal, a warrior seeking her missing father, with whom she lost contact long ago. She's accompanied by an amnesiac robot named Chervil.
Mechanics
Vernal Edge is a 2D platformer. The player explores various areas, gathers items, avoids traps and battles hordes of enemies using an extensive arcade combat system. The player can wield melee weapons, cast magic and chain attacks into combos.
Since the game is a metroidvania, many areas are initially inaccessible and can only be accessed after unlocking certain upgrades.
The game's structure is rather open. Vernal owns a skyship, aboard which she can freely travel between the floating islands. Contrasting the rest of the game, the flying sequences are 3D.

The game only supports singleplayer.
Technical aspects
Vernal Edge makes use of an appealing, pixelated, 2D retro artstyle.
