Unsouled is an action game presented in 2D perspective, featuring numerous RPG elements and pixel art style. The game was developed by one man, Korean Jinsub Jung, who founded Megusta Game studio and previously published mobile productions. As he admits, while creating the game he was inspired mainly by the game Onimusha 2.
Plot
In Unsouled, we play as the Fallen Prince, who travels through various lands and fights the undead, while discovering the secrets hidden in these areas. The story doesn't play a key role, rather it's just a pretext for bloody massacre and sowing destruction among enemies.
Mechanics
The main attraction of Unsouled is dynamic, arcade combat. We have normal and special attacks at our disposal, combining them into combos. We block the opponents' attacks or counter them. The second option is connected with a high risk, but in the case of a successful manoeuvre, we will strongly hurt the enemy. We can also strengthen our movements with a special dash, performed in any direction. By collecting different types of souls from defeated enemies, we are able to charge special area attacks, such as unleash, used to destroy objects in the game. The environment in the game is very interactive. Many times we have to destroy objects on our way, both to simply get to the next stage, and to quickly get rid of opponents on our way.
Each of the protagonist's skills is divided into attributes, allowing us to strengthen attacks or change their form to best fit the situation on the battlefield. To use these special forms, the protagonist utilises unique orbs, the number of which depends on the level of the ability responsible for their supply. These abilities allow us to repel enemies, break through walls, destroy certain objects and so on. In turn, by pressing the attack button at the right moment of the previous blow, we can combine moves in a smooth sequence, making it easier to perform combos.
During the game we gain two types of souls: one is used to perform special attacks, the other for character development. We strengthen the hero in many categories - each of the special skills has its own, and its development allows to increase damage or other parameters related to it. In addition, it is possible to develop the health, stamina or the supply of orbs needed to perform area attacks. To gain minor bonuses, in turn, you need unique orbs, divided into passive (strengthening the character's statistics) and active (allowing you to give an additional effect to the attack performed, such as an explosion).
Technical aspects
Unsouled features pixel art graphics, which makes the game stand out in terms of style and low hardware requirements. The whole is complemented by electronic music.
