U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean Description
U-Boat: Battle in the Mediterranean for PC is the second unofficial expansion to Silent Hunter III, the famed submarine simulator developed by Ubisoft Romania. The add-on was developed by X1 Software, the studio known for Silent Hunter III: Seawolves. This time, we are invited to participate in a campaign taking place in the Mediterranean theatre from May 1941 to September 1943, the date of the Allies’ invasion of Italy.
Mechanics
U-Boat: Battle of the Mediterranean brings many novelties and upgrades to gameplay, graphics, and interface. We’ve received a new campaign, based on real events, additional ports in Mediterranean and Black Sea theatres (Salamis, Constanta, or Taranto), as well as new ships (forty-four ship classes, including three previously unseen vessels such as Scharnhorst-class battleships or Gneisenau-class cruisers).
The authors have also remade a number of mechanics, introducing even more realism to the already demanding game. Torpedo attacks have been reworked, offering a more realistic approach to ricochets and misfires. The visibility, including the radars’ detection capabilities and nighttime vision has been lowered. In return, nearby ships have more chance of detecting afloat submarines. Aside from the above, we’ve been treated to a number of features that play more of a cosmetic role (the ability to change the color of our vessel, or additional air support).
Finally, the game received improved visuals (realistic smoke effects, improved damage system) as well as a complex tutorial and a system of hints.
