Steam
A third-person action game with elements of a roguelike. Tyrant's Realm features a combat system inspired by Dark Souls (however this is not a soulslike) and visuals straight from the first PlayStation console. We explore a dark fantasy world, using various melee weapons to deal with standard enemies and bosses.
Tyrant's Realm is an action game with roguelike elements. It was mainly inspired by games released on the first PlayStation, as well as by the soulslike genre. The independent studio Team Tyrant, which has smaller-scale projects in its portfolio, such as Drunk and Drunk: Relapsed, is behind the development of this project.
Story
Tyrant's Realm transports us to a dark fantasy world, teetering on the brink of collapse under the rule of the titular tyrant. We take on the role of a character whose family has been fighting against the sinister ruler for generations. It's on us that the protagonist finally manages to deal with the tyrant once and for all.
Gameplay
In Tyrant's Realm the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP). While exploring locations, we often engage in combat with opponents. On the battlefield, we make use of a wide range of melee weapons - from swords and shields, to spears and axes.
Clashes require from us not so much dexterity, but rather a sense of tactics and perceptiveness. The key to success is both efficient attacking and performing quick dodges, as well as careful observation of the enemy movements in search of their weak points or gaps in defense. On our way, we encounter a series of enemies and bosses who are significantly stronger.
The game world is procedurally generated. We have no choice but to start a new journey after we die. As we progress, our character grows in strength not only thanks to increasingly powerful equipment (we find weapons, shields and armor in the game world or buy them from merchants), but also through various enhancements such as runes or skull altars that increase our power.
Graphics
The graphic design of Tyrant's Realm is maintained in a retro style, referring to the times of the first PlayStation.

The main pros of the game
- Atmosphere and Visuals: The game successfully captures the retro PS1 aesthetic, with charming graphics and a nostalgic vibe. Many players appreciate the art direction and the overall atmosphere.
- Engaging Combat: The combat mechanics, inspired by Dark Souls, are generally praised for being satisfying and responsive. Players enjoy the fluidity of attacks and the challenge of enemy encounters.
- Variety in Gear and Weapons: There is a good selection of weapons, shields, and armor, allowing for different playstyles. The unique effects of armor pieces add to the gameplay depth.
- Performance: The game runs smoothly on various platforms, including the Steam Deck, which is a significant plus for portable gaming.
- Replayability: The roguelike elements, including meta-progression and varying difficulties, provide incentive for multiple playthroughs, keeping the gameplay fresh for some players.
The main cons of the game
- Lack of Enemy Variety: Many reviews highlight a significant issue with the limited variety of enemies, leading to repetitive gameplay. Most enemies fall into a few archetypes, which can diminish the excitement of encounters.
- Repetitive Boss Fights: Bosses tend to have similar mechanics and can become monotonous after a few encounters. The lack of unique movesets and strategies for higher difficulties is noted as a drawback.
- Coin Collection Mechanic: The method of obtaining coins by breaking barrels feels tedious to some players, taking away from the overall pacing of the game.
- Combat Mechanics Issues: Problems with the parry system, including a short timing window and awkward mechanics, frustrate players. Additionally, the inability to run while locked onto enemies can feel clunky.
- Short Playtime: Many players report completing the game in under three hours, leading to concerns about the overall content and depth of the experience.
The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users
- More Diverse Enemy and Boss Designs: Players are requesting a wider variety of enemies and more unique boss mechanics to enhance replayability and challenge.
- Expanded Lore and Story: Some reviews mention the lack of a deeper narrative or lore, which could enrich the experience.
- Improved Combat Mechanics: Suggestions include separating dodge and sprint actions, enhancing the parry system, and adding more fluid movement options.
- Additional Content and Updates: There is a strong desire for more levels, enemies, and gameplay features, such as a multiplayer mode or additional game modes, to increase longevity.
- Environmental and Sound Design Improvements: Players have noted that environmental sounds and audio feedback could be enhanced for a more immersive experience.
Summary
- Overall, while "Tyrant's Realm" is appreciated for its engaging mechanics and nostalgic visuals, there are clear areas for improvement, particularly regarding content variety and depth. Players are optimistic about future updates that could enhance the game's appeal.
