TumbleSeed

TumbleSeed is an arcade game from roguelike genre developed by a team of independent developers: Benedict Fritz, Greg Wolhwend, Joel Corelitz, David Laskey and Jenna Blazevich. It has appeared on many platforms, including SWITCH, PC and PS4.

Plot

TumbleSeed takes the player for a journey to a fantastic, fairy-tale like world. The main hero is the titular seed, trying to reach the summit of a huge mountain to save his home from many threats.

Game mechanics

TumbleSeed for SWITCH, PC and PS4 uses side view, with us being tasked to beat five various, procedurally generated stages, set in surreal environments. During our travels, we will meet jungles and forests, deserts and even ancient temples and altars. The titular seed rolls around balance beam, both ends of which we can move up and down to avoid countless traps and deadly opponents. What’s more, our unusual hero must interact with the environment to progress through the game.

Luckily, the seed isn’t defenseless, as there are over 30 special abilities, waiting to be unlocked. Those include ThornSeed that gives it spikes able to eliminate enemies; SpringSeed, which gives a temporary flying; or StormSeed that pours water into holes (falling into one instantly ends our protagonist).

Technical aspects

TumbleSeed’s visuals on SWITCH, PC and PS4 are another thing that makes it stand out, with unique and colorful two-dimensional style. This is complemented by a soundtrack that stands at the borderline between two genres: trance and ambient.
