A spin-off of the Trials series, an arcade motorcycle racing game. Trials of the Blood Dragon is set in the pulp cyberpunk universe known from the standalone expansion for Far Cry 3. The plot takes place in the near future, and you play as a pair of twins, Slayter and Roxanne Colt, the descendants of the protagonist of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
Trials of the Blood Dragon for PC, XONE and PS4 is an arcade game featuring a combination of the mechanics of the Trials series with a wacky sci-fi universe of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, a standalone expansion for the popular sandbox TPP shooter game by Ubisoft. Trials of the Blood Dragon is a result of the cooperation between the creators of the Trials series, Finnish studio RedLynx, with Ubisoft Kiev, specializing in PC conversions of the major Ubisoft titles.
Plot
The story of Trials of the Blood Dragon takes place in an alternative contemporary reality — strictly speaking, in 2019. You play as a pair of twins, Slayter and Roxanne Colt, the descendants of the legendary Rex “Power” Colt, the protagonist of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. 12 years after Vietnam War 2, in a world inhabited by mysterious blood dragons, where nothing is as it used to be, the protagonists, tough like their father, clever like their mother, go to Vietnam War 4 to save their freedom and the whole world.
Mechanics
The mechanics of Trials of the Blood Dragon are a unique combination of arcade and physics-based races known from the Trials series and the kitschy world of the action movies of the 1980s, known from Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. The basics, however, remained faithful to previous titles by RedLynx, and the gameplay is focused on beating levels full of obstacles, which you can not only have to finish in one piece, but also as quickly as possible.
Still, the gameplay was largely expanded, and apart from a classic motorcycle, you can also use other means of transport, such as a BMX, a freight car or… your own feet. There's more to do in game than just racing, as some levels require the use of a grappling hook or a firearm. During the story campaign, the Colt twins visit many wacky locations, participate e.g. in the Vietnam War, Miami streets riots, a fight with TV show characters in Tokyo, and even go into space.
Technical aspects
Visuals-wise, Trials of the Blood Dragon for PC, XONE and PS4 is vastly different from the other games in the Trials series, and the locations are rendered in a colourful kitschy style, matching the wacky atmosphere of the production. The game is complemented by a soundtrack by Australian band PowerGlove – the creators of the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon soundtrack.

RedLynx and Ubisoft's weird mashup could have worked, but it gets derailed whenever it goes off the track

When it comes down to it, Trials of the Blood Dragon feels like some fans wanted to do something with the story and somehow incorporate it into a game. That game was a motocross game. If the entire game was more platforming and less motorcycles and vehicles, it had potential to be entertaining. The game only offers a single player experience, as well. Hopefully, the release of this game will jolt Ubisoft into doing an actual sequel or a prequel to the actual Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon game. Trials of the Blood Dragon is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam for $14.99, which is a fair price.

Trials of the Blood Dragon gets some things very right and other things very wrong, and unfortunately it ends up being a mixed bag. Hopefully we get a true Blood Dragon sequel at some point, because this would be an unfortunate sendoff for this promising series.
