Another annual edition of one of the most popular train simulators. For many years the series was developed Rail Simulation Developments. The foundations of the new installment remain unchanged and the game still focuses mostly on controlling various train types on tracks located in different corners of the world. The player can select from many faithfully recreated rail tracks and realistic models of actual trains.

Train Simulator 2016 for PC is the seventh installment of the Train Simulator series which is famous for realistic simulation of trains… and for offering great number of DLC expansions that are worth hundreds of dollars. The series started in 2009 (at first under the title RailWorks) and new installments are released as free upgrades for the owners of previous editions. The same goes with 2016 edition, but in this case the update doesn’t offer all innovations offered by this title. The game was developed by Dovetail Games (also known as RailSimulator.com), the creators of previous entries in the series.

Mechanics

The foundations of Train Simulator 2016 for PC remain the same as in previous games in the series. The game is a title for the greatest fans of trains and it offers a chance to control various trains on tracks scattered across the world. In addition to free ride, the game offers challenges in which the vehicle and the track are predetermined and the player must fight against specific conditions (time limit, bad weather etc.). The game also offers an editor that allows creating locomotives, locations and tasks.

What makes Train Simulator 2016 different from its predecessors is new content. The game offers 15 previously unavailable locomotives and three special challenges. The title also introduces Railfan mode, which is a virtual version of the so-called “train-spotting” (the player positions a camera in selected place at the rails and then he takes photos of passing trains).

Technical aspects

Train Simulator 2016 for PC has graphics similar to the 2015 edition. The greatest change can be noticed in user interface. In addition to that, the less experienced train fans can use a new help/tutorial system.

It is worth mentioning that at first the title was supposed to be powered by Unreal Engine 4 and bring a visual revolution to the series. However, in the end the task was too hard for the developers (they did not manage to modify the game on time). Thanks to that, Train Simulator 2016 remains compatible with all the DLC expansions that were created for the previous installments of the series.

Train Simulator Series

A series of dedicated railroad simulation games, created and developed by Dovetail Games studio. The roots of the series date back to 2007, when it debuted a train simulator titled Rail Simulator. After the group responsible for it was disbanded, the three developers decided to continue the development of this project and formed their own team. Two years later, the developers put into the hands of players their first original work.
