Time Crisis is the first installment of the popular series of rail shooters released on PS1. The console edition of the game was released in 1997, two years after the debut of its arcade prototype, and introduced into the genre the revolutionary concept of hiding from enemy fire between shooting.
Story
In Time Crisis we play the role of Richard Miller, a special agent of the international security agency V.S.S.S.E. He is sent with the mission to save Rachel McPherson, daughter of the ruler of a fictional state Sercia. The girl was kidnapped by Sherudo Garo, a former dictator who, together with his army of mercenaries, is trying to force the current president to surrender power to him.
Mechanics
Time Crisis is a representative of the so-called rail shooters, a sub-genre characterized by the player's lack of control over where the protagonist is going. The player's role is limited exclusively to shooting hordes of enemies appearing on the screen, and remembering to reload weapons between subsequent shots.
The title consists of three extensive levels, at the ends of which there are unique bosses to beat. In addition, the PS1 edition has been expanded by a bonus mini-campaign, which is characterized by a partial non-linearity. Namco's production introduces a significant improvement to its genre through the cover system. With the push of a button, the protagonist hides behind a cover, where he can safely reload the weapon without being threatened by opponents.
Technical aspects
Released on PS1, the title is characterized by simple three-dimensional graphics and a cinematic story campaign. The title is also compatible with GunCon, a PlayStation accessory that imitates a real gun.
