The White Door is a fairly original point-and-click adventure game in which we try to help a certain person - Robert Hill - recover lost memories. The title was developed by the independent studio Rusty Lake (known for such productions as Rusty Lake Paradise and Cube Escape: Paradox). The publisher is Second Maze Studios.
Plot
Robert Hill wakes up in a psychiatric hospital in Rusty Lake, remembering almost nothing of his life. The player tries to help him restore his memory by recreating his former lifestyle (in the hope that the familiar routine will stimulate the mind and allow the man to remember something). Will the protagonist be able to learn the secret hidden in his past?
Mechanics
The White Door is quite a classic two-dimensional point-and-click adventure game, in which the actions are most often observed from above - from the top=down perspective. The game consists in exploring the locations, using objects, solving puzzles and finding clues to learn the main plot (it is worth noting that the story is interactive).
The main task of the player is to recreate the daily rituals of the main character - quite typical activities such as brushing teeth or preparing meals. Depending on what we do, the hero may recall various things in his life that take the form of visions. Then we have to interpret what we see on the screen, trying to understand the character's past.
The game uses an unusual user interface. The screen is divided into two parts - on one side we see the game world, and on the other side there is a window where animated close-ups are presented, showing specific objects, persons or situations important at a given moment.
Game modes
In The White Door, we can only play alone. The basis of the game is a feature campaign.
Technical aspects:
The White Door has an original, two-dimensional graphic design, which is characterized by great minimalism. The appearance of characters and objects is very simplified, which combined with dividing the screen into two parts makes the production look a bit like a surreal, amateur comic book. This impression is compounded by the characteristic approach to the use of colors - most of the time what we see on the screen is black and white, but at certain moments (especially in scenes where we observe the hero's memories), colors appear.
The original atmosphere of The White Door is also shaped by the atmospheric soundtrack, for which Dutch composer Victor Butzelaar is responsible.
