The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is an innovative adaptation of a popular gamebook from the 80s of the last century. The title was developed by Tin Man Games studio, the devs of Sons of Uruzime and Fighting Fantasy: House of HelI.
Story
The action of the game takes place in a gloomy fantasy universe. We play the role of an adventurer who wants to get to the treasures of a mighty sorcerer who, according to rumors, is hiding at the top of the eponymous mountain. From the inhabitants of a nearby village, we learn that the chest protecting the desired costumes is closed with two locks. First, you have to get both keys, and then you have to defeat the sorcerer himself.
The title is based on a gamebook under the same title from 1982, which is part of the Fighting Fantasy series. It is an absolute classic of the genre, repeatedly adapted for computers, consoles and mobile devices.
Mechanics
In The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, the player does basically the same as in classic gamebooks - explores dungeons, fights monsters and disarms traps, all by choosing between several actions described in words at the right moments.
All this sounds typical of the genre, but the way Tin Man Games has approached this classic is very different from other mobile gamebooks. The descriptions are still in plain text, but the game displays them only in the form of balloons resembling scraps of paper; the rest of the screen is occupied by fully three-dimensional and animated locations through which the character's figure moves. Also the choices made were visually-relevant. For example, if you get to a crossroads with three paths, you will see a scrap of paper with text at each of them.
Battle sequences look like typical tactical RPGs. During battles, we move to a board with square grid and fight in turn-based mode. There was also a system of progression, which enables us to improve the statistics of the hero for experience points gained during adventures.
