The Sky Below for PC is a sequel to the unusual platform game The Sun at Night, which told an alternative story of the legendary dog astronaut named Laika. The game takes place in a cold war reality of a world destroyed by a Soviet invasion. It is the second part of the planned trilogy named Stray. The trilogy was developed by an independent Texas studio, Minicore.
Plot
The game starts where the previous entry ended. The protagonist, a mechanical female dog named Laika, journeys from the icy Arctic to large and inaccessible forests of Russia. There she will discover shocking and well hidden information that tell more about the history of the game’s world and about the mysterious power that enables the Soviets to conquer almost the whole planet. As it is revealed, the answer is hidden someplace high above the clouds.
Mechanics
The gameplay mechanics of the PC version of the game are similar to the ones present in the previous entry of the series. The title belongs to the metroidvania genre. The genre combines classic platform games with freedom to explore the world and with character development system taken from role-playing games. The Sky Below uses the same, quite rich development trees as its predecessor. This enables the player to continue developing the protagonist in same way as before. The introduction of three different suits is a novelty. Each of them has different weapon and passive skills that are useful at different moments of the game.
Technical aspects
The graphics of the game and animation quality were slightly improved, although they still use a fantasy, techno-industrial style. The developers improved the artificial intelligence of the enemies. They also added more types of opponents and more check points. Determined players can also look for many hidden places and collectibles that are useful during the game.
