A two-dimensional arcade platformer with RPG features from Discord Games studio. Chasm tells a story of a soldier who returns home after a long war. He arrives in an abandoned mining town and discovers most of its inhabitants have disappeared after entering a mysterious temple, deep down beneath the village. Our hero decides to stop the awakened evil, rescue the town’s inhabitants, and then safely return to his home.

Chasm is a new franchise that combines 2D platformer in fantasy world with features of cRPG titles. It is a work of Discord Games, an independent studio known from smaller indie projects like Take Arms and 48 Chambers.

Plot

Chasm for PC, PS4 and PSV tells a story of a soldier who is on his way home after a long war and arrives in an abandoned mining village. Its inhabitants keep disappearing, and the hero discovers that they vanished after entering a mysterious temple deep down beneath the city, awakening an ancient evil. Our character is stopped by supernatural powers and decides to eliminate them to free townsmen and finally return home.

Game mechanics

Creators of Chasm for PC, PS4 and PSV designed its gameplay with a few titles in mind, mostly 1997’s Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, first entries in The Legend of Zelda and Diablo series, as well as original Metroid from 1986. They tried to grasp a character of classic platformer of the 80s and 90s, but enrich their formula with RPG features, giving us the ability to develop our hero’s skills and abilities. The game is based on metroidvania genre, popularized by e.g. first titles from Castlevania series. Developers focused on relatively free exploration of the world, with new levels being unlocked through obtaining skills and powers required to access them.

Discord Games prepared six huge areas, where we speak with few NPCs, avoid deathtraps, solve environmental puzzles, defeat hordes of enemies and discover secrets of the mine. There are also boss fights which will require using both standard equipment (swords, shield) and special abilities. PC, PS4 and PSV version of Chasm offers two game modes – normal and hardcore, the latter being designed for the most experienced players, mainly due to the fact it generates the environments on the fly, so they are never the same.

Technical aspects

Chasm for PC, PS4 and PSV uses pixelated visuals, giving it a vibe of classic 8 and 16-bit games. We visit varied environments, from a colorful city to dark dungeons.
